A one-click charge that reads as unauthorised at a higher price

By Ryan Richardson · Published 8 October 2026

A one-click charge is fine at a small amount and starts reading as unauthorised, to the buyer and to the card network, once the amount climbs into the hundreds. There's no universal dollar line; the fix is to set and write down your own threshold, below which a saved card charges with one click, and above which the buyer sees a real checkout with a visible total first.

The symptom

A one-click upsell or higher-priced order bump produces a disproportionate share of disputes or chargebacks, compared to the main offer charged the same way.

The cause

A buyer who agreed to a one-click charge at a small amount agreed to that amount, not to whatever a later upsell happens to cost. Reusing the same one-click consent at several hundred dollars, with no new confirmation step, reads as an unauthorised charge from the buyer's side even when the original consent was technically given. This is a judgement call, not a formula; there's no single dollar figure that's universally safe or unsafe.

The fix

Set a threshold, write it down, and match consent to price against it. Below the threshold, charge the saved card with one click. Above it, send the buyer through a real checkout showing a visible total before the charge happens. Refund disputes freely at small amounts rather than fighting them: card networks count disputes received, not disputes won, and the fee applies regardless of who wins.

A sensible way to set the threshold is to think about what a reasonable buyer would expect from the phrase 'one click', not what the platform technically allows. A buyer who clicked once to buy a small order bump did not sign up for a mental model where that same click silently authorises several hundred dollars later in the sequence.

How to spot it

Check whether your highest-priced one-click offer uses the same consent flow as your lowest-priced one. If there's no written threshold separating the two, and no visible-total confirmation step above it, that's the gap producing your dispute rate at the higher price points.
